Support Needed

Organisations needing support to tackle Covid-19 challenges are listed below.

Fane Street families need your help to get online!

With schools in Northern Ireland set to remain closed until September and then only likely to be opened on a phased basis, it looks like online learning will continue to be a key way to ensure children do not miss out on their education for some time. For our school, this presents huge challenges. Fane Street Primary has a continually changing intake, with around 80% of our pupils speaking English as an additional language (EAL). Many of our families are from asylum seeking or refugee communities and a number of others are also from low income households of any background or ethnicity. For these families, access to the internet is a major barrier to continuing their education during the Covid-19 pandemic. Often families are accessing the internet on one device, usually a pay-as-you-go top up smartphone. The cost of data to access online learning for the children is therefore outside the financial means of many families. Adding to this the fact that many of the parents also speak English as an additional language, parental support for home learning in English is a huge challenge. We are therefore appealing to business for assistance with the following:

• Access to mobile phone top-up data • Internet enabled devices including phones or tablets • Any other means of accessing the internet at home
